Waist reduction for shirts and blouses
When the shirt or blouse fits well at the top but feels too wide at the waist
GERMENS shirts and blouses have a regular cut with a balanced, everyday-friendly waist shape. For many customers, this fit is exactly right. For slim men and women, however, it can happen that the shoulders, chest and overall length fit well, while the garment still feels too wide around the waist and hem.
In this case, a waist reduction can be useful. The shirt or blouse is shaped closer to the body without significantly changing the fit around the chest. This alteration is especially helpful for people with a more pronounced shoulder area, for example due to sports or training: the shoulders need enough room, while the waist and hem may sit more closely.
What is changed during a waist reduction?
For the waist reduction, the side seam of the shirt or blouse is opened by hand. The alteration is made from the hem up towards the underarm area. A narrow strip of fabric is then removed from both sides. Afterwards, the side seams are closed again cleanly and professionally.
This alteration mainly reduces the waist measurement and the hem width. The chest measurement changes only slightly, because the new side line runs smoothly upwards and fades out towards the upper part of the garment. The result is a slimmer shape without making the chest area too tight.
Who is this alteration suitable for?
The waist reduction is especially suitable for slim men and women whose shirt or blouse fits well at the shoulders and chest, but feels too loose around the stomach, waist or hem. It can also be very useful for athletic body shapes with broader shoulders and a slimmer waist.
It is important not to choose the reduction too tightly. The shirt or blouse should sit closer to the body, but still feel comfortable. It should not pull or feel restrictive when sitting, walking or moving the arms.
Best tested with the fitting service
The right waist reduction can be tested especially well with the GERMENS fitting service. First, you can find the correct basic size. Once shoulders, chest and length fit well, the try-on shirt or blouse can be checked to see whether some width should be removed at the side seams.
The best way is to pin the excess fabric along the side seam. You can do this carefully yourself or have it pinned by an alterations tailor or someone with sewing experience. This makes it easier to judge how much waist reduction is appropriate.
Alteration can also be made later after the first washes
The waist reduction does not always have to be ordered immediately. It can also be carried out later after the first washes. This can be useful if you want to judge the final fit only after the cotton fabric has settled into its everyday shape.
Cotton is a natural material. During washing, the woven fabric can relax slightly and change minimally in length or width. This is called shrinkage and is normal for cotton. With GERMENS cotton fabrics, this shrinkage can be around 2 to 3 %. For this reason, it can be sensible to wear and wash a shirt or blouse a few times before ordering a very precise waist reduction.
