ARS CEREVISIAE means “The Art of Beer.” The name represents a drink with a history reaching far beyond modern breweries, beer gardens and purity laws. For thousands of years, fermented grain, communal drinking and the craft of brewing have accompanied the development of human communities.

To mark International Beer Day on August 7, 2026, GERMENS dedicates an extraordinary long-sleeve shirt to this cultural heritage. ARS CEREVISIAE is not an ordinary beer-themed shirt covered with bottles, mugs or obvious slogans. Its design explores beer as a combination of nature, knowledge, patience and transformation – artistic, enigmatic and rich in details waiting to be discovered.

The design resembles a page from the sketchbook of an early naturalist, botanical illustrator and brewmaster. Numerous hop vines move through the composition. Among them are ears of barley, yeast cells, flowing water and fragments of brewing kettles, cooling coils, valves, pipes and measuring instruments.

The apparatus recalls illustrations from historic brewing manuals. Yet nothing is arranged like a sterile technical diagram. Plants grow through pipes, hop cones conceal copper vessels, and streams of liquid dissolve into loose lines, ink splashes and transparent watercolor.

Black and dark-brown pen drawing meets freely applied shades of hop green, sage, petrol, turquoise, beer yellow, honey gold, amber, copper and terracotta. Changing line weights, cross-hatching, ink blots, imperfect contours and watercolor extending beyond the outlines give the artwork the character of a genuine hand-colored drawing.

Beer as cultural history

Ancient cultures already understood how grain and water could be transformed through fermentation. In historic Mesopotamia, beer formed part of everyday life, celebrations, rituals and economic activity. A song written approximately 4,000 years ago in honor of Ninkasi, the Sumerian goddess of beer, preserves one of the earliest known descriptions of brewing.

Over the centuries, brewers, monasteries, towns and regional communities developed their own methods, flavors and customs. Beer became nourishment, a traded commodity, a specialist craft and a means of bringing people together. Even today, regional beers reflect their landscapes, ingredients and the people who make them.

ARS CEREVISIAE translates this remarkable cultural history into wearable art. It celebrates the knowledge and craftsmanship behind beer rather than simply the act of drinking it.

The story you can share while wearing this shirt

There is a story about an old brewmaster who carefully recorded every recipe used in his brewery. His most important page, however, contained no quantities and no brewing times. Instead, it showed streams of water, ears of barley, hop vines and curious little yeast cells.

His apprentice asked why the pipes on the page turned into plants and why hop cones appeared to float between stars and cogwheels.

“Because beer does not begin inside a kettle,” the master replied. “It begins in the soil, the rain, the light and the patience of people.”

He then drew a golden line across the entire page. It passed from a single barley grain through a copper kettle, disappeared behind hop leaves and reappeared inside a cloud of fermentation bubbles.

“What does that line represent?” asked the apprentice.

“Time,” said the master. “You cannot hold it in your hands, yet no transformation can happen without it.”

In the margin, he wrote two words: ARS CEREVISIAE.

Nobody knows whether this particular brewmaster ever existed. His imagined drawing nevertheless lives on in this shirt – reminding us that a few natural ingredients can become something people have shared for thousands of years when knowledge, craftsmanship and time come together.

100% cotton – natural and comfortable

The long-sleeve shirt is made from 100% cotton. This natural fabric feels pleasant against the skin, is odor-neutral, comfortable and suitable for long days. Cotton gives the shirt the practicality required for everyday wear without diminishing its exclusive appearance.

With appropriate care, the fabric is durable and retains its pleasant feel. The brilliant colors and intricate pen details are beautifully reproduced on the cotton. The fabric is produced and printed in Saxony in accordance with strict German and European requirements concerning quality, processing and the use of chemical auxiliaries.

ARS CEREVISIAE is released as part of the exclusive SIEBEN AUF EINEN KLICK micro-collection. Orders open on August 7, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. The design can only be ordered until August 14, 2026 – or while pieces remain available.

Only seven long-sleeve shirts will be produced in total. Each selected size can be ordered only once. After this edition, the design will never be manufactured again. Every shirt comes with a personal, hand-numbered certificate documenting its exclusivity.

GERMENS men’s shirts are generally available in sizes XS to 6XL. For this collector’s edition, however, orders are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Once a size has been reserved, it will not be available a second time.
