The Petrified Forest in Chemnitz
In the city of Chemnitz in the federal state of Saxony, Germany, there is a natural monument that captivates every visitor - the petrified forest.
It is one of the oldest and best-preserved petrified forests in the world and is an important testimony from the Permian period, a geological epoch around 299 to 252 million years ago.
The natural phenomenon that gave rise to this forest was triggered by volcanic activity and subsequent sedimentation of ash and mud.
This turned the trees into stone and imbued them with various minerals that gave them their stony texture.
Since its discovery in 1737, the petrified forest has been studied and consists of numerous fossilised tree trunks, branches and roots.
These fossils provide information about the flora and climate of the time and allow scientists to better understand the ecosystem and living conditions in the Permian.
In order to exhibit and research the finds from the petrified forest, the Museum of Natural History Chemnitz was established in Chemnitz.
The exhibition not only shows the impressive fossilised trees, but also fossils of animals and plants that lived in the same period.
This offers visitors an insight into the fascinating prehistoric world and contributes to research into the history of the earth.
Psaronius
Mysterious colours and shapes suggest to us the design richness of nature. The trunk of a tree fern reveals its innermost, its cellular structure. Buried by terrestrial elemental forces 291 million years ago during an explosive volcanic eruption, it was subsequently permeated by mineral fluids. Down to the microscopically smallest cavities of the plant quartz precipitates, a compound of silicon and oxygen, which only acquires its colour through the power of trace elements. Hardened in periods of time beyond human imagination, the fossilised fern stem only unfolds its full fascination today. Cut lengthwise and polished with a diamond saw, its cells awaken to a new existence as facets of a gemstone that does not exist again in identical form on our earth.
