Productinformation in detail

Back darts for Long sleeve Button-up shirts and blouses

When there is too much fabric in the back

Depending on the shape of the body and the back, it can make sense to shape a Long sleeve Button-up shirt or blouse more closely in the back area. Especially if the back curves slightly inwards or if the garment falls too loosely at the back, there may be too much fabric in the back section. This excess fabric can be reduced with back darts.

Back darts improve the silhouette without making the entire Long sleeve Button-up shirt or blouse tighter. They work specifically in the back section and can help the garment sit smoother, cleaner and closer to the body at the back.

Alternative or addition to waist reduction

Back darts can be a good alternative to a waist reduction. They can also be useful as an additional alteration if a Long sleeve Button-up shirt or blouse is too wide both at the sides and in the back.

A waist reduction mainly changes the side line from the hem up towards the underarm area. Back darts, on the other hand, reduce fabric specifically in the back section. Which solution is better depends on the body shape, the shape of the back and the desired fit of the garment.

How back darts are made

For this alteration, two darts are sewn into the back. These run vertically in the back section. In most cases, they begin above the hem, around 15 to 20 cm above the lower edge, and end in the upper back area, around 15 to 20 cm below the shoulder seam or back yoke.

This shape takes in fabric in the middle back area. As a result, the Long sleeve Button-up shirt or blouse sits slightly closer to the body at the back. The alteration is especially useful when folds appear in the back or when the garment feels too wide in the back area, even though shoulders, chest and length fit well.

Not equally suitable for every design

Back darts change the fabric surface in the back section. For this reason, they are not equally suitable for every GERMENS design. With very clear motifs, faces, symmetrical graphics or large image compositions, a dart can visibly affect the design.

With abstract patterns, free colour surfaces and lively artist designs, back darts are often much easier to justify. In these cases, the alteration is usually less noticeable because of the varied design. If necessary, GERMENS checks whether back darts can be implemented sensibly for the respective design.

Check the fit first with the try-on service

The best way to assess the right alteration is with the GERMENS try-on service. First, the correct basic size can be found. If shoulders, chest, sleeves and length fit well, but there is too much fabric in the back, back darts can be a useful adjustment.

When trying on the garment, it should be checked whether the Long sleeve Button-up shirt or blouse remains comfortable while standing, sitting and moving. The alteration should not be chosen too tightly, so that there is still enough freedom of movement.

Order back darts by centimetres

Back darts can be ordered by centimetres. The selected measurement refers to the reduction per dart or per side of the back. For example, if 2 cm are ordered, approximately 4 cm of fabric width is reduced in total in the back area.

The exact effect depends on the cut, the fabric, the design and the individual body shape. Therefore, a careful assessment before ordering is important. If you are unsure, an alterations tailor or someone with sewing experience can help with pinning the garment.

Consider cotton shrinkage

For Long sleeve Button-up shirts and blouses made from cotton, natural shrinkage during washing should be considered. Cotton is a natural material. During washing, the fabric can relax slightly and change minimally in length or width. With GERMENS cotton fabrics, this normal shrinkage can be around 2 to 3 %.

For this reason, it can be sensible to wear and wash a Long sleeve Button-up shirt or blouse first before making a very precise back adjustment. Back darts can also be ordered later through the GERMENS alteration service.

Important note about individually altered products

Please note: Long sleeve Button-up shirts and blouses with individually made back darts are altered specifically according to your selection. These products therefore cannot be exchanged or returned as regular returns. Statutory rights in the event of justified defects remain unaffected.

Care instructions for our cotton products can be found under washing and care instructions.
