Shortening sleeves on GERMENS shirts and blouses
When the shirt or blouse fits, but the sleeves are too long
Sometimes a shirt or blouse fits very well around the body, but the sleeves are slightly too long. This is completely normal, because every person is built differently. Arm length, shoulder shape, posture and the way a shirt is worn all influence where the cuff finally sits.
For this reason, GERMENS offers an individual sleeve shortening service. You can choose the desired shortening in centimetre steps. The alteration is made directly on the finished shirt or blouse, so the sleeve length is adjusted precisely to the selected garment.
When is the sleeve length right?
The sleeve length is usually right when your arm hangs naturally down and the cuff reaches slightly beyond the wrist, approximately towards the middle of the back of the hand. The cuff should not fall too far over the hand, but the sleeve should also not be too short.
If in doubt, a sleeve may be slightly too long rather than too short. Sleeves that are too short can quickly look tight and may feel uncomfortable when you move.
The final fit is not determined by the sleeve alone. Shoulder width, shoulder shape and posture also affect how the cuff sits. That is why a small individual adjustment can be more useful than relying only on a standard sleeve length.
How the sleeve shortening is done
First, the cuff is carefully removed from the sleeve. Then the required amount of fabric is cut from the sleeve. After that, the cuff is professionally sewn back on. The look of the shirt remains clean and consistent, and the alteration is not visible from the outside. The shirt does not look altered; it looks as if the sleeve length had been made this way from the beginning.
This work requires care, precision and time. Shortening the sleeves of one shirt takes around 45 minutes, because both sleeves must be adjusted evenly and the cuffs must be attached accurately again.
Alternative: folding the cuff once
Before ordering a sleeve shortening, it can also be worth trying the cuff folded back once. The cuff can be turned outward and buttoned again. This creates an effect similar to a classic double cuff, which is traditionally worn with cufflinks and is especially known from business and formal shirts.
On GERMENS shirts, this can create a particularly attractive detail, because the inside of the cuffs is often different in colour or pattern. When the cuff is folded back, this detail becomes visible and creates a stylish accent. At the same time, the visible sleeve length becomes slightly shorter. In some cases, this may already solve the problem without any alteration.
Important recommendation before ordering
Please choose the shortening carefully. A sleeve can be shortened, but it cannot easily be lengthened again. More information about individual alterations can be found in our alteration service.
Please note: Individually shortened shirts and blouses are altered specifically according to your selected measurement. For this reason, customised garments cannot be exchanged or returned.
With this individual sleeve shortening service, your GERMENS shirt or blouse can be adjusted even more precisely to your body. The result is a garment that not only stands out through art and design, but also feels comfortable and well-balanced in everyday wear.
