The sleeve shortening by 3 cm is often a useful alteration when a men’s long sleeve shirt, a GERMENS button-up shirt or a blouse fits correctly around the upper body, but the sleeves are visibly too long. The alteration helps the cuff sit more harmoniously at the wrist and makes the garment look more balanced overall.

Especially with special men’s shirts or individually designed blouses, the fit should match the high-quality workmanship. A sleeve that is too long can disturb the overall impression, even though the size, shoulder and chest width have been chosen correctly.

How do you recognise the right sleeve length?

When the arm hangs naturally down, the cuff tip should reach approximately to the middle of the back of the hand. If the cuff falls clearly lower, shortening by 3 cm may be appropriate. The decision should be made carefully because a shortened sleeve cannot simply be lengthened again afterwards.

If in doubt, a sleeve may be slightly too long rather than too short. Sleeves that are too short can quickly look tight and may feel uncomfortable when you move.

Precise cuff workmanship

For this alteration, the cuff is carefully removed from the sleeve. We then remove 3 cm of fabric and sew the cuff back on accurately. The alteration is not visible from the outside and should look as if the shirt or blouse had been made in this sleeve length from the start.

As an alternative, some GERMENS shirts allow the cuff to be folded back once. This creates an elegant effect similar to a double cuff and often shows attractive colour or pattern contrasts on the inside.
