More width around the stomach and hem

Sometimes a Long sleeve Button-up shirt, blouse or T-shirt fits well at the shoulders, sleeves and chest, but feels too tight around the stomach or hem. Especially for men with a fuller stomach, for more corpulent body shapes or for women and men who need more room around the middle of the body, a waist expansion can be useful.

With this alteration, the garment becomes more comfortable in the lower area. The expansion mainly affects the stomach, waist and hem. The chest area, however, changes only slightly. If a Long sleeve Button-up shirt, blouse or T-shirt is already clearly too tight around the chest, choosing a larger size is usually the better solution.

How the waist expansion is made

For the waist expansion, the side seam is opened by hand. A narrow fabric strip is then inserted on each side, from the hem up towards the underarm area. This fabric strip matches the design of the selected product. As a result, the insert blends very well with the Long sleeve Button-up shirt, blouse or T-shirt and is hardly noticeable in the overall look.

The inserted fabric strip creates an additional side seam. The alteration is carried out cleanly and professionally. The aim is not to completely reshape the garment, but to create more freedom of movement specifically around the stomach and hem.

Expansion in centimetre steps up to 5 cm per side

The waist expansion can be ordered in centimetre steps. The selected measurement applies to one side. For example, if you order an expansion of 2 cm, a 2 cm wide fabric strip is inserted on the right side and another 2 cm wide strip on the left side. This results in an overall increase of approximately 4 cm in circumference.

Expansions are possible up to 5 cm per side. An expansion of 5 cm on the right and 5 cm on the left therefore creates approximately 10 cm more circumference around the stomach and hem area. The exact effect always depends on the cut, the fabric and the individual body shape.

Check the fit first with the try-on service

The safest way to check the right width is with the GERMENS try-on service. First, the correct basic size can be determined. If shoulders, chest and length fit well, but the waist or hem feels too tight, the desired expansion can be assessed more accurately.

Important: A waist expansion mainly helps in the lower part of the garment. It is not the right solution if the product is too small overall or already tight around the chest. In that case, the next larger size is usually the better choice.

Consider cotton shrinkage after washing

For Long sleeve Button-up shirts, blouses and T-shirts made from cotton, natural shrinkage during washing should be considered. Cotton is a natural material. During washing, the fabric can relax slightly and change minimally in length or width. This so-called shrinkage is normal and not a quality defect.

A waist expansion does not have to be ordered directly when buying the garment. It can also be useful after several months or even after years. Bodies change over time, and sometimes a Long sleeve Button-up shirt, blouse or T-shirt becomes a little too tight around the stomach or hem.
