Subtle alteration for men’s shirts, blouses and long sleeve shirts

The sleeve shortening by 1 cm is a very subtle alteration for GERMENS shirts and blouses. It is suitable when the garment fits well around the body, but the cuff reaches just slightly too far beyond the wrist. With a premium men’s shirt, a long sleeve button-up shirt or an elegant blouse, even one centimetre can noticeably improve the fit.

The right sleeve length does not depend on arm length alone. Shoulder width, shoulder shape, posture and personal wearing preference also influence where the cuff sits. This is why a shirt in the correct size can still have sleeves that feel a little too long.

When is 1 cm shortening useful?

Shortening the sleeves by 1 cm is suitable when the cuff sits only slightly too low and you want a very precise but restrained adjustment. When the arm hangs naturally down, the cuff tip should reach approximately to the middle of the back of the hand.

If in doubt, a sleeve may be slightly too long rather than too short. Sleeves that are too short can quickly look tight and may feel uncomfortable when you move.

How the sleeve shortening is carried out

For this alteration, the cuff is carefully removed from the sleeve. The sleeve is then shortened by 1 cm and the cuff is sewn back on with precision. The alteration requires skilled workmanship, but it is not visible after completion. The shirt or blouse keeps its original appearance.

With many GERMENS shirts, folding the cuff back once can also be a good alternative. If the inside of the cuff has a contrasting colour or pattern, this creates an attractive detail similar to a modern double cuff.
