When the shirt fits, but the sleeves are too long

The sleeve shortening by 4 cm is suitable when a premium men’s shirt, a cotton shirt for men or a blouse fits very well around the body, but the cuffs reach clearly too far over the hand. This can happen because standard sizes are based on average measurements, while individual body shapes differ considerably.

Arm length, shoulder shape and posture together determine how long a sleeve actually appears. This is why a GERMENS shirt in the correct size may still need an individual sleeve adjustment.

How to assess a 4 cm shortening

A shortening by 4 cm is a clear but still moderate adjustment. It is useful when the cuff does not just sit slightly too low, but visibly extends beyond the ideal position. When the arm hangs naturally down, the cuff should reach approximately to the middle of the back of the hand.

If in doubt, a sleeve may be slightly too long rather than too short. Sleeves that are too short can quickly look tight and may feel uncomfortable when you move.

Alteration with detached cuff

For this alteration, the cuff is completely removed. We then shorten the sleeve by 4 cm and sew the cuff back on cleanly and securely. This work requires precision and takes around 45 minutes per shirt because both sleeves must be finished exactly the same way.

With many GERMENS shirts, it is also worth looking at the inside of the cuff. When the cuff is folded back once, an attractive colour or pattern contrast can become visible. In some cases, this fold may already replace the need for shortening.
