Shortening the hem on Long sleeve Button-up shirts, blouses and T-shirts
When the garment looks too long
Sometimes a Long sleeve Button-up shirt, blouse or T-shirt fits well at the shoulders, chest and width, but looks too long overall. In this case, it can make sense to shorten the hem. With this alteration, the hem is shortened evenly at the front and back, so that the proportions of the garment remain balanced.
Shortening the hem can be especially useful for people with a shorter body height. If a top is too long, the upper body may appear longer and the legs may look shorter in proportion. A properly shortened hem can make the overall body proportions look more harmonious.
Even shortening at the front and back
With this alteration, the hem is not shortened only at the back, but evenly all around. This means that the front and back are adjusted to the same length. The existing hem is cut off and then sewn again cleanly.
The shortening is carried out in 2 cm steps. This makes it possible to adjust the length in a controlled way without changing the garment too much. Excessive shortening should be avoided, because once a hem has been shortened, it cannot easily be lengthened again.
Guide for the right hem length
For Long sleeve Button-up shirts, a useful guideline is that the hem should sit roughly at the height of the middle of the back pocket of a pair of trousers. This is not a strict rule, but it is a good reference point for a balanced length. The shirt should dress the upper body well without visually shortening the legs unnecessarily.
The best approach is to pin the Long sleeve Button-up shirt, blouse or T-shirt evenly all around. Afterwards, the garment should be viewed in the mirror from a little distance. This makes it easier to judge whether the proportions between upper body and legs look balanced.
Check the right length with the try-on service
The right hem length can be checked especially well with the GERMENS try-on service. First, the correct basic size can be selected. If shoulders, chest and width fit well, but the garment looks too long, the hem can be pinned on the try-on model.
It is helpful to mark the desired new length all around with pins or tailor’s chalk. An alterations tailor or someone with sewing experience can assist with this. It is important that the new length looks good not only close up, but also from a little distance.
Consider cotton shrinkage
For cotton products, natural shrinkage during washing should be considered. Cotton is a natural material and may change slightly after the first washes. With GERMENS cotton fabrics, normal shrinkage can be around 2 to 3 %.
For this reason, it can be sensible to wear and wash a Long sleeve Button-up shirt, blouse or T-shirt first before shortening the hem very precisely. The alteration can also be carried out later through the GERMENS alteration service.
Important note about individually altered products
Please note: Long sleeve Button-up shirts, blouses and T-shirts with an individually shortened hem are altered specifically according to your selection. These products therefore cannot be exchanged or returned as regular returns. Statutory rights in the event of justified defects remain unaffected.
