Side slits for women’s blouses

More freedom of movement around the hips and hem

With some women’s blouses, the fit at the shoulders, chest and waist is very good, but the lower part can feel slightly too closed. Especially with a feminine, more pronounced hip shape, it can be comfortable if the blouse has more freedom of movement at the sides. In this case, side slits can be a useful alteration.

Side slits help the blouse fall more loosely around the hips and hem and reduce tension when sitting, walking or moving. The blouse keeps its basic shape, but feels lighter, more flexible and more comfortable in the lower area.

How the side slits are made

For this alteration, the side seam is opened from the lower hem upwards. The area is then carefully reworked. A small amount of fabric is removed, both opened edges are hemmed cleanly, and this creates a side slit with a slightly triangular shape.

The side slit can be made in different lengths, for example 5 cm, 10 cm or 15 cm. The longer the slit, the more freedom of movement is created in the lower part of the blouse. The length should be chosen so that it suits the body shape, blouse length and the respective design.

Especially suitable for women’s blouses

This alteration is especially recommended for women’s blouses when a little more room is desired around the hip area. The blouse can fall more harmoniously without having to choose a larger size overall. This is particularly useful when the blouse fits well at the top and only needs more ease at the bottom.

For men’s shirts, side slits are usually not necessary. Other alterations are generally more useful there, such as a waist reduction, waist expansion or hem shortening. Side slits are mainly an alteration for women’s blouses and their specific fit around the hips.

Test first with fitting blouses

The best way to assess this alteration is with fitting blouses through the GERMENS try-on service. First, the correct basic size can be found. If shoulders, chest and waist fit well, but the blouse feels a little too tight or too closed at the bottom, side slits can be a good solution.

When trying on the blouse, it should be checked how it falls while standing, sitting and walking. It is helpful to mark the desired slit height at the side and view the effect from a little distance in the mirror. This makes it easier to judge whether 5 cm, 10 cm or 15 cm is suitable.

Not a replacement for a larger size

Side slits create more freedom of movement in the lower area, but they do not replace a larger size. If the blouse is too tight overall or already pulls clearly at the chest, back or stomach, a different size should be selected. Side slits are ideal when the blouse generally fits well and only needs a little more ease around the hips and hem.

Consider cotton shrinkage

For GERMENS blouses made from cotton, natural shrinkage during washing should be considered. Cotton may change slightly after the first washes. With GERMENS cotton fabrics, this normal shrinkage can be around 2 to 3 %.

For this reason, it can be sensible to judge the final fit after the first washes. If you are unsure, an individual alteration can also be carried out later through the GERMENS alteration service.
