Music drifted through the open windows, carafes of dark red wine stood on the wooden tables and the first stars appeared above the rooftops.

An elderly winemaker had just returned from the vineyards. Beside him, his wife carried a basket filled with ripe grapes. They placed it on a table where friends, neighbours and travellers were sitting together. Nobody asked where the others had come from. They simply moved a little closer, refilled the glasses and began sharing stories.

Later, two guests walked up to the ancient ruins overlooking the village. Standing between weathered columns, they watched the lights of the island and the boats resting on the calm water below. For a moment, past and present seemed separated by nothing more than a single warm summer evening.

Athens and Santorini united in a Greek dreamscape

The back design brings together several famous places in Greece and transforms them into an imaginative landscape. High above the scenery rises the Acropolis of Athens with the Parthenon. Beneath it is an ancient theatre reminiscent of the Odeon of Herodes Atticus on the southern slope of the Acropolis.

The whitewashed houses and churches with their brilliant blue domes evoke the distinctive architecture of Oia on the Cycladic island of Santorini. They cling to steep cliffs while narrow stairways and winding lanes descend towards the deep-blue Aegean Sea. The back therefore does not depict one single real place. Instead, it combines Athens and Santorini in a romantic Greek dreamscape.

The front continues the journey. A warmly illuminated taverna, people sharing wine around a table, a scene from the grape harvest, a small harbour with colourful boats and views of the sea, mountains and white-and-blue island architecture capture different aspects of Mediterranean life.

Grapes, ancient vessels, wine goblets and elaborate ornaments form the main features of the sleeves. The collar, cuffs and smaller details incorporate traditional Greek key patterns. Grapevines, olive branches and sculpted golden baroque elements connect the scenes, transforming the shirt into one continuous visual narrative.

An elaborate placed print across 21 pattern pieces

GREEK WINE is not made from ordinary fabric carrying a continuously repeated pattern. The complete artwork has been developed specifically for the construction of the shirt. Each of its 21 individual pattern pieces is assigned a precisely planned section of the design.

The two front panels create a unified composition despite the button placket running through the centre. The large back artwork is adapted to the shape of the back panel, while the vertically arranged sleeve motifs follow the tapered shape of the arms. Even the collar, cuffs, plackets and smaller inner pieces feature artwork created specifically for their positions.

As the shirt is available in ten sizes from XS to 6XL, the artwork is individually adapted to the pattern pieces of every size. Temples, houses, people, boats, vessels and ornaments therefore appear in their intended positions after the fabric has been cut and sewn. This placed-print technique requires considerably more planning and precision than conventional repeat fabric and transforms every GERMENS shirt into a genuine piece of wearable art.

The fabric is made from 100% cotton and feels natural and pleasant against the skin. Cotton is neutral in odour, breathable and comfortable. It is equally suitable for special occasions and everyday wear, remaining pleasant even when worn for many hours.
